Facing a serious health crisis can shake anyone to their core. When multiple surgeries and weeks in an ICU become part of your reality, the emotional and mental toll can feel overwhelming. During such times, finding ways to stay grounded and balanced is not just helpful—it becomes essential for survival and healing. This post shares how music, art, books, and fitness became my lifelines in the hospital ICU, helping me navigate isolation, fear, and physical weakness.

Using Music to Quiet the Mind
One of the first tools I turned to was music. My phone had several music apps loaded with playlists that I had curated over the years. When the beeping machines and sterile environment of the ICU felt overwhelming, music offered a refuge.
Calming playlists helped reduce anxiety and quiet the racing thoughts.
Familiar songs brought comfort and a sense of normalcy.
Instrumental and ambient tracks created a peaceful background that made it easier to rest.
On a particularly difficult day after my esophagus surgery, I felt especially weak and unable to walk, leaving me confined to my room. The isolation felt suffocating. To cope, I put in my AirPods and turned to music. Listening to Jack Johnson, I closed my eyes and meditated, letting the soothing melodies quiet my mind and help me relax.
Listening to music was not just about passing time; it was a way to control my mental space when everything else felt out of control. Even short sessions of music helped me regain focus and calm.
Drawing as a Way to Relax and Find Balance
The hospital chaplain gave me pencils and paper, a simple gesture that turned into a powerful tool. Drawing allowed me to express feelings that were hard to put into words.
Sketching helped me focus on something creative instead of the pain or fear.
It provided a sense of accomplishment and progress.
The act of drawing slowed down my thoughts and helped me breathe more deeply.
Even if the drawings were rough or unfinished, the process itself was therapeutic. It reminded me that I still had control over something, no matter how small.
Books to Keep the Mind Sharp and Entertained
Books became another essential companion during my stay. They offered an escape and a way to keep my mind active.
Reading helped me forget the hospital walls for a while.
It kept my brain engaged and sharp despite the physical weakness.
Books provided stories and knowledge that inspired hope and resilience.
One of my go-to books during my hospital stay was Shadow of Night from the All Souls series by Deborah Harkness. Reading this book provided a much-needed reprieve from my situation. I chose a mix of fiction and non-fiction, balancing entertainment with learning. Having a book in hand was a reminder that life outside the hospital continued and that I would return to it.

Rebuilding Strength Through Fitness
Despite the physical toll of multiple surgeries, I knew that movement was crucial. With the help of a physical therapist, I started walking in the ICU 1-2 times a day.
These walks were slow and challenging but vital for rebuilding strength.
Physical activity helped me feel more grounded in my body.
It gave me a sense of progress and control over my recovery.
Fitness was not about pushing limits but about reconnecting with my body and celebrating small victories. Each step was a reminder that healing was happening.
Overcoming Isolation and Emotional Lows
The hardest moments were when isolation felt crushing. Missing my husband and daughters every day was painful. During these times, the tools I had—music, art, books, and fitness—became anchors.
They helped me manage feelings of loneliness.
They prevented despair from taking over.
They gave me ways to connect with myself and the world beyond the hospital walls.
Having these resources available made a significant difference in my emotional resilience.

Finding Balance When It Feels Impossible
When you face a health crisis, balance can seem out of reach. But balance does not mean feeling perfect or happy all the time. It means finding ways to steady yourself so the low moments don’t take over.
Use whatever tools you have to calm your mind.
Engage in creative activities to express emotions.
Keep your mind active with reading or learning.
Move your body gently to rebuild strength and confidence.
Reach out for support, even if it’s just through small interactions.
These strategies helped me stay grounded and hopeful during the toughest times.
